How Background Remover works

This tool uses @imgly/background-removal — an AI segmentation model compiled to WebAssembly. The model (~30MB) downloads once and is cached in your browser. When you upload an image, the AI analyzes every pixel to classify foreground (the subject) from background using a deep neural network. It generates an alpha matte (transparency mask) and applies it to produce a clean PNG with a transparent background. The entire process runs on your device — your image is never sent to any server. The model is optimized for portraits and product photos.
